The conjunctiva is a clear mucous membrane that is made of epithelial tissue and consists of cells and underlying basement membrane covering the sclera and lining the inside of the eyelids.
The conjunctiva lubricates the eye by producing mucus and a small volume tears (the lacrimal gland also produces tears). It contributes to immune surveillance and helps to prevent the entrance of harmful microorganisms into the eye.
