AN/APG-70

The AN/APG-70 is a multimode radar with air-to-air and air-to-surface capabilities. It is a highly reliable radar with improved maintenance features. Now manufactured by Raytheon, the AN/APG-70 was originally developed by Hughes Aircraft from the AN/APG-63 for the US Air Force. It is used on the F-15C, D, and E fighter aircraft. Esencially, the AN/APG-70 is an X-band pulse-doppler radar, designed for both air-air and air-ground missions. It is able to look up at high-flying targets and down at low-flying targets without being confused by ground clutter.

The AN/APG-70 was a 1980s redesign of the APG-63 for greater reliability and easier maintenance. Additionally, gate array technology enabled the APG-70 to incorporate new modes with enhanced operational capabilities. To reduce production costs, many of the upgraded radar's modules are common with the F/A-18's APG-73 radar, while the computers / processors are 85% in common with that of the F-14's APG-71 radar.
