Staphyloma

A staphyloma is an abnormal protrusion of any part of the eyeball. This protrusion of the uveal tissue of the eye is generally white in color, due to the inner layers of the eye. It occurs due to weakening of outer layer of eye, like the sclera, by an inflammatory condition.

There are five types of staphyloma; 1) anterior (corneal) staphyloma, which involves the cornea and the nearby sclera; 2) intercalary staphyloma, a localized bulge in limbal area, lined by the root of the iris; 3) ciliary staphyloma, a bulge of weak sclera lined by ciliary body, which occurs about 2-3 mm away from the limbus; 4) equatorial staphyloma, which occurs on the equator of the eye; 5) posterior staphyloma, which occurs in the posterior segment of the eye, typically diagnosed at the region of the macula.
